Why Live Here?
The Grand Traverse area region has always been a very special place for our family. We have been coming here on vacations for over 20 years, so you can imagine it was quite a blessing when we had the opportunity to move here permanently. Driving into work every day and then home again at the end of the day along West Bay is completely different from the urban landscape we left in Fort Wayne, Indiana our former home. The natural beauty of this region is instantly apparent to everybody who comes here or so it would seem. Whether it is the woodlands of Kalkaska County, the views of East Bay from the bluff on US 31, the coastal drive out old Mission Peninsula, or the bucolic rural settings of Leelanau County, this region is rich with scenic beauty. The rolling hills of this region stand in stark contrast to the flat fields of Northeast Indiana. The local landscape filled with fruit orchards, vineyards and sunflower farms all along West Bay and East Bay are indicative of a different type of agriculture than the corn and soybeans that are familiar to an Indiana resident.
Seeing the tall masts of the sailing vessels in West Bay remind us that this once used to be a vibrant seaport economy located on the sweet water sea that is Lake Michigan. This nautical heritage adds another element of intrigue to a landscape that is like no other in the Midwest. The rolling hills close to our home are covered with vineyards that produce some of the finest wines that an amateur wine enthusiast such as I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. All of these natural pleasures are punctuated by a series of vibrant small towns and villages, each with their own distinct personality. If quality of life is a key characteristic for attracting business and people to a region, then surely the Grand Traverse region has been blessed with an overabundance of reasons for people to want to come here and live life to the fullest.
We hope you will add your impressions of the region here on this page so that we may share with each other the special stories that make us want to live, work and play here in the Traverse Bay region.
